Where did the idea of “Leading the way with irrational generosity” come from?

–

It is one of @Life.Church core values. I first heard about it many moons ago in Tulsa, OK when my friend Amy invited me to @life.church.southtulsa.

–

During the offering, I remember the campus pastor saying something surprising. He said, “If you are an adult in need of food, shelter or clothing reach in the basket and allow it to bless your needs.” I turned to Amy and ask “Did he really say that?”

–

At each church experience, they serve sweet tea, unsweet tea, water, and coffee. They added lemonade in the summer and hot cocoa in the winter. There were snacks like granola bars, fruit, Famous Amos cookies, chips, and more.

–

I have to admit I took this for grants. When I moved to Charlotte, NC, I attended a church with a huge lobby and they didn’t provide anything. They did have food for their volunteers in a small room off to the side.

This is when I learned that irrational generosity is about more than money. It can be time, energy, a little something to make someone’s experience better, knowledge, or anything else one has to give.

I love the idea and carry it with me to this day.
