“I’m not buying a house until I get married.”
How crazy does this sound?
It didn’t sound crazy when I was younger and enjoying my apartment-dwelling days.
If I stuck to my original plan, I wouldn’t be a homeowner today. It’s kind of embarrassing to think how crazy my brain was working back in the day.
First of all, let me tell you how much I LOVED apartment living. When I had a problem they fixed it. The pool, community room, and aesthetics were so nice. My neighbors were good.
In my head, there was no reason to buy a house until I got married. At the time it didn’t want to get stuck living in the same place for 30 years. I guess I thought getting married made being stuck better. Who knows?
When I found out I was moving to Virginia from North Carolina for work I started an apartment search. This time I wanted an upgrade from my 648 sq ft apartment that cost $758 per month.
Imagine the horror when I saw rent prices in the $1300+ range. I was not going to pay all this money for an itty bitty space. After following Dave Ramsey for so long, it didn’t make good financial sense to keep renting.
If I had rented an apartment for $1300 per month for the last 7 years, I would have paid $109,200 that I could never get back. This doesn’t even include the annual rent increases.
Looking back, I am glad that I got some sense and bought a house.
Now I got my eyes on getting a beach house 🙂
What’s keeping you from buying a house?
